Which Golf Simulators are used at the PGA Tour?
As we glide through the last half of the 2022-23 PGA Tour, golf simulators remain a hot topic.
Preferred by professional and amateur golfers alike as a means of improving their game without spending hours on the course, their popularity doesn’t look set to end any time soon.
But which golf simulators are used on the current PGA Tour and how will they be used?
The TrackMan Golf Simulator
“TrackMan’s sensors will substantially increase content available for analysis and initiate the development of new insights while creating the opportunity for us to develop innovative visualizations for fans to view all the incredible shots.”
Ken Lovell
Throughout the tour, events have seen an increased use of TrackMan’s advanced real-time club and ball tracking and tracing solution.
As TrackMan’s technology, Doppler Radar and club and ball tracking follow every golf shot taken during the season – fan experience for TV, OTT, and other digital platforms will be significantly enhanced.
How does this change what fans have seen?
The partnership doubles previous ball-in-motion tracing capabilities and gives fans accurate visualisation of ball flight paths for shots inbound to the green.
As well as being incredibly entertaining and insightful, these changes have given fans access to a vast amount of information, including how and why the ball moves and arrives at a particular position, using TrackMan’s in-built technology to capture:
· Club speed
· Ball speed
· Curve
· Landing spin
· Launch angle
· Spin rate
· Spin axis
· Apex
· Carry
· And much more!
If that wasn’t enough, the effects of wind, weather, and altitude, termed environmental factors, on shots can also be recorded and displayed with advanced aerodynamic models.
Has the range of capture improved?
Thanks to the technological advancements of the TrackMan system, fans can also expect expanded tracking capabilities – expanding from tee boxes only to shots hit from the fairway and around the green.
No matter if natural elements, such as trees, or adverse weather including rain, fog, sunrise, and sunset block the visual progress of the ball - the TrackMan can trace balls up to 400 yards in any conditions.
With an accuracy of 1 foot at 100 yards.
To achieve this, around 40 units are placed around the course to track every shot using advanced radar and camera units to capture the final resting position of every PGA Tour ball.
PuttView X augmented reality glasses
“Putting is the most vexing part of the game for so many golfers, and PuttView X will help players learn and improve in an intuitive and engaging way where they need it most - outside on real greens.”
Christoph Pregizer
Unveiled at the 2023 PGA Merchandise Show in January, PuttView advanced further strides into golf simulation at the 2022-23 PGA Tour with the PuttView X.
Like something out of an 80s sci-fi movie, these augmented-reality glasses help golfers improve their putting game by allowing them to visualise everything from the ideal path of the ball to the aiming line right on the green in front of them.
How do you use the PuttView X?
Controlled with voice commands and hand gestures, the wearer can move around freely, set any hole or ball location, and adjust the green spread depending on the conditions.
The PuttView X glasses will then scan the green and the surrounding area, calculating:
· Distance
· Break
· Slope
· Speed
Based on this information, the glasses then display the putting path before your very eyes, with a translucence that allows you to remain aware and conscious when out on the green.
Golf simulator learning – wherever you are.
The PuttView X transforms the green into an interactive learning platform, taking the benefits users of the PuttView golf simulator will be familiar with out into the real world.
Focussing on an often-frustrating area of golf coaching, these glasses revolutionise indoor golf simulator training aids, helping players learn how to ‘read the green,’ improve in all key areas of putting and in time, play without the glasses – confident in their ability.
An ingenious feature of the PuttView X includes a smartphone app that allows coaches to see what their students can see and amend the visuals using the smartphone controls.
Combining human and technological golf coaching in a set of glasses.
